May Exhibition

Helms of the Homunculus
May 1st - June 2nd
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 2nd 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Nick Criscuolo and Brian Galderisi

The Gallery at Porter Mill is pleased to present it’s May exhibition, Helms of the Homunculus featuring the works of Beverly based painter/animator Nick Criscuolo and New York based painter/photographer Brian Galderisi. Both are graduates of Montserrat College of Art.

Criscuolo and Galderisi both explore the figure and portraiture in their work, distorting and disrupting it to different ends and through different means. Criscuolo obliterates any likeness to the human form through his process and materials; Galderisi preserves the human form but re-contexualizes it by placing it in surreal, film-noiresque environments.

Criscuolo is fascinated by our tendency to pick a face out of randomness whether one really exists or not, his paintings force your eye to question what it sees. Galderisi’s figures are so central to his work, it’s not a question of whether they do or do not exist, but a question of where and why.

Join us for an artist reception as part of Beverly’s First Thursday Art Walk on Thursday, May 2nd from 6:00pm – 8:00pm in the Gallery at Porter Mill. Free and open to the public. Contact director Bea Modisett at studios.portermill@gmail.com with any questions.

April Exhibition: Field of Dreams

Field of Dreams
Maria Malatesta & Christine O'Brien
April 3rd - April 28th
Opening Reception: Thursday April 4th, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

The Gallery at Porter Mill is pleased to present it’s April exhibition Field of Dreams, featuring the paintings of Boston based artist Maria Malatesta and Beverly based artist Christine O’Brien.  Both Malatesta and O’Brien create  paintings that boast bold use of color and texture and warmly display the subtleties of nature. While the artists employ methods that evoke the natural world, they also utilize fuzzy detail and dissolved shapes to whisk away any tangible or fully recognizable form. This ambiguity allows the viewer to bring their own associations and memories to the works.

Maria Malatesta makes her studio in the South End of Boston. She holds strong ties to the Beverly arts community as a popular professor of a mixed media class at Montserrat College of Art. She also teaches privately in her studio. Christine O’Brien runs her studio out of Beverly’s own Porter Mill. She recently had a solo-exhibition in the South End at Galatea Fine Art.

Please join us in the gallery for the opening of this exhibition and a toast to the artist on Thursday, April 4th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm as part of Beverly’s First Thursday Art Walk.  The exhibition will run through April 28th. Gallery hours are Wednestday, Thursday and Friday 5:00pm – 7:00pm, Saturday and Sunday 12:00pm – 4:00pm and by appointment. a show curated by Montserrat College of Art's Bear Gallery, a student run organization that "bridges the gap between art student and professional artist"

"Otherworldly" is a two dimensional exploration of the personal creativity of Montserrat students.

Every artist has a drive that keeps them creating, and oftentimes that drive is of a personal nature. This show will give Montserrat students the chance to show why they love art, what they live for, and to inspire others to create the art that they truly want to be making.

Work includes: original fantasy, science fiction, psychological spaces, extraordinary creatures, and exciting places.
